Hostel in Santiago

Hostal Romandia

I recently spent the weekend in Santiago to recorrer (tour/explore) with a few friends. We started mid-afternoon on a Friday to try to find a hostel. With "Lonely Planet" guide book in hand, we went to one of the recommended hostels in Providencia. We soon found that not only was that hostel full, but after calling a few other hostels, all seemed to be packed because of the summer season.

A man at the hostel recommended that we stay at Hostal Romandia, one that recently opened. He said that because they just opened, they could offer us a room for three for 12 mil pesos a night each (about 22 dollars).

We walked to the hostel, located on Román Díaz and were a little frustrated because it was a bit of a distance from the metro station (about 20 minutes), but when we arrived, we were greeted with kisses and open arms from the owner.


We were the second group to stay in the hostel, and we could still smell the fresh paint. The bathroom right off the room was one of the cleanest imaginable.

Breakfast (included) consisted of fresh bread, juice, café café (de grano (the real stuff)), ham, cheese, and yogurt. The owner and a young employee she works with asked us several times for comments and feedback. It was clear that they wanted to make us comfortable and enjoy our experience.

The main employee at the hostel speaks English. Also note that the hostel is going to raise its price to 15 mil a night (about 27 dollars) after it starts getting a steady business.

As some general advice, if you are staying in Santiago for the night, consider staying in Providencia. It is extremely safe; one man told us that some families don't even lock their homes in that neighborhood. Also note that the hostels you will find in Santiago will be pricier than other places in Chile because it is a major city.
