Smoking in Chile

>> Thursday, November 20, 2008

There is no doubt that you will find smoking a lot more common in Chile than in the US. Don't be surprised if you're with a Chilean and he or she proceeds to smoke cigarette after cigarette. You can compare this to the United States when you are looked down on for smoking. It's quite different; in Chile, you might feel uncomfortable at a party if you are the only one without a cigarette in your hand.

About 4 million out of the 15 million in Chile smoke tobacco regularly.

Cigarettes are relatively cheap; they cost between 1 to 3 dollars.

As of last year, smoking is prohibited in schools, hospitals, government offices, stadiums, buses and other public buildings.
