Top 5 Cafés in Valparaíso

If you have the time and if you’re anything like me, you’ll spend hours walking around the hills of Valparaíso, marveling at the graffiti, and wandering in and out the various cafés and shops. Read more about Valparaíso and its charm. The best hill to be in if you’re a tea or coffee drinker is the Cerro Concepción.

You can get there by taking any micro to the Plaza Sotomayor and then taking the ascensor Concepción up to the hill. That elevator will take you to streets that are decorated with small cafés with giant personalities.



1. Color Café – walk in and enjoy one of their several kinds of teas from all over the world while reading messages written on napkins decorating the entire wall. Grab a napkin and start drawing or writing; if you’re lucky they’ll add it to their collection. Color Café, although touristy, represents the hill well.








2. Café Vinili – Good for tea or a light meal. Vinili is a comfortable and a bit more upscale café. The chef will come to your table to greet you and explain everything on the menú in English or Spanish. I recommend the Sopaipillas with Pebre.



3. Café Jardín – This café just opened in late November. It’s worth a visit just to see the intricate decorations, all designed by the young owner and her sister. Old suitcases, handmade cloth table mats and painted quotes on the wall all contribute to the ambiance. You can expect to pay a little more than in some other cafés but the comfy couches, great atmosphere and friendly owners make it worth a visit.




4. Café con Letras – This café is great for a cup of coffee and a piece of keish. It has an inside but outside sort of feel, with the huge sunroof inside.


5. Café Desayunador – Go to the Café Desayunador for a great, filling breakfast and real (from the pot!) coffee. You can also go for a healthy lunch of salad and a sandwhich with whole wheat bread, avocado, and cheese…or a not so healthy but still delicious piece of cake. The sort of diner atmosphere gives the café a casual feel.
