Review: Pomaire Restaurant, New York City
>> Sunday, December 28, 2008
Out of thousands and thousands of restaurants in New York City, can you believe that there is only one Chilean restaurant?
It's called Pomaire Restaurant, named after that little town that makes a lot of pottery about an hour south of Santiago. The owner, as he explains on the website, tried to achieve a comfortable feel, like his home town in Chile. He definitely accomplishes the Chilean look; the restaurant is fully equipped with Chilean music, a metal Chilean map outside, and a picture of Chile's president, Michelle Bachelet.
They use free range organic chicken and fresh salmon from Chile. The food is top notch, and although it's not quite what you would find in Chile, it's pretty close.
If you want something traditional, get an empanada de pino for an appetizer with a pisco sour. As a main, go for the pastel de choclo or the salmon and don't miss the mil hojas with manjar for dessert.
If the restaurant were in Pomaire, it wouldn't get business because of the price tag, but it fits comfortably into Restaurant Row in midtown Manhattan. Expect to pay 35 to 40 dollars a person.
The restaurant is located in the heart of the theatre district in midtown Manhattan at 371 W. 46th street and is really convenient if you're going to a show afterwards.

I love this restaurant!! FYI, we also went to a new Chilean restaurant in Rego Park, Queens called Horcon Bistro. It is absolutely delicious - a very cozy atmosphere - smaller than Pomaire and family run. It was fabulous and we definitely recommend it!
