Infomercial Sales Climb in Slow Economy

I just read an article on WPIX 11 that infomercial sales are climbing despite the slow economy. Apparently, the items sold on infomercials are fun, cheap and exciting, exactly what we need right now.
I don't really know what to think about this. Is cheap, dumb stuff really what we need or is it just being used as a distraction? Put down your remote and your phone and save the money that you would be wasting for something useful, an essential tool, perhaps.
