Hostel Santa Cantalina, Arequipa

If you're looking for a clean, cheap place to stay close to the Plaza de Armas in Arequipa, go to Hostal Santa Catalina. For 30 soles for a double (5 dollars per person per night), you get a room with a shared bathroom. The man who runs it is welcoming and friendly, but doesn't speak much English.
The hostel is centrally located, five blocks from the main plaza, right across the street from the convento de Santa Catalina. it's also really close to the San Lazaro neighborhood where you can find cute cobblestone roads and colonial houses.
The hostel has a kitchen where tourists are encouraged to boil water, watch TV, and han out with some Peruvians who come to play cards and chat.
The Hostel is centered around a beautiful courtyard with several types of plants and has a deck on the roof with beautiful sunset views. The roof has chairs and tables and a clothesline.
Ask the owner to arrange tours and give you restaurant suggestions.
