Night in Taquile, Peru

If you're tired of hordes of tourists, spend the night in Taquile. There will probably be no running water or electricity where you stay, but you'll get a calm and simple night. Tourist groups pass through around 11, but are gone by 1:00, when the boat to Puno leaves. (costs 15 soles, around 5 dollars).

For a good place to watch the sunset, just hike to the top of the island, but watch out  because the islands various paths can get confusing for the non-native.

There are some not-so impressive pre-inca ruins just a short walk from the plaza where you can go if you've run out of things to do.

But other than that, as day turns to night, grab a candle and some cards and have a relaxing (and maybe chili) night on Taquile. 

To find a hostel, get directed to the main plaza and then just walk around. There are a few spots that say "hostel." If you can't find one, go back to the main plaza and ask any local and he or she will direct you to one. 

We stayed with the woman in the red sweater to the right. She let us watch her doing textiles and talked to her about the culture of the island.
