While living and working in Peru, I became great friends with Jose Cusi, owner of Cusi Travel. Since meeting Jose, I admired his love of hiking and being in the outdoors, his passion for teaching travelers about his Quechua ancestry and culture and his desire to make a positive impact on the tourism industry in Peru. While working in Peru, I found that the great majority of travel agencies are actually operated in other countries and therefore, the revenue never actually enters Peru and never positively impacts the lives of Peruvians. In addition, many companies barely pay their workers minimum wage - especially to their porters who do all of the manual labor for the hike on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. In discussing the mission of Cusi Travel with Jose, it really came out that his two great missions as a business owner are to provide a high quality service to his travelers and to treat his employees well by paying them well above other travel agencies and forming great relationships with them.
Needless to say, Jose's business is thriving. The business has excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and Jose tells me they are also opening up a Bed and Breakfast only a few blocks from the main square in Cusco! I wish Jose and his team the best of luck as they continue in their success!
