Lost Cédula de Identidad in Viña del Mar or Valparaíso
>> Wednesday, December 3, 2008
You will be asked for your cedula a hundred times in Chile. It's essentially your Chilean identity on a plastic card. You'll use it for getting into bars, as ID for trains and buses, and to accompany your credit card when you buy something.
You will be asked to give your "rut" (pronounced 'root') in many situations. Your rut can be found on the bottom of your card and acts like your social security number for your time in Chile.
If you lose your cedula, do the following:
1. Block the card by going to www.registrocivil.cl. Go to "En Línea" and "Bloqueo Gratuito de Cédula de identidad y Pasaporte" and follow the instructions.
By phone: 02-7822484
In the office of the registro civil:
Viña del Mar: Nueva Central 177, phone: 2685102 (8:30 to 2:00)
Valparaíso: Esmeralda 916 Piso 2, phone: 2270710 (8:30 to 2:00)
2. Tell the police (carabineros) in the area where you lost it.
3. To obtain another cedula, go to the Registro Civil and present the same information as you presented the first time.
