Vik Muniz to speak at Jardim Botanico, Rio de Janeiro August 19
>> Friday, August 19, 2011
I'm excited to hear Brazilian artist Vik Muniz speak tonight at the Jardim Botánico (Botanic Garden) in Rio de Janeiro tonight at 7:00. Born in São Paulo, Vik Muniz now lives and works in New York City. He is famous for creating images out of everyday objects, such as the photo to the right, from his series "Sugar Children" in which he created portraits of children who work on sugar plantations in St. Kitts out of sugar. He's also made works from trash, chocolate syrup, peanut butter and jelly, etc.
He's been shown at galleries all over the world, including the MoMA in New York among others.
I got turned onto him through his documentary, Wasteland, that came out in 2010 about the people who live in the landfills outside of Rio de Janeiro. Check it out here!
