If you're looking for a casual restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner in northern New Jersey, try Janice A Bistro in Ho-Ho-Kus. I have lived in New Jersey my entire life, and it was just the other day when my friend took me to this hidden-gem for the first time.
It's casual and friendly and the owner is receptive and tries to get to know you for the next time. The mural painted on the right wall and the wooden decorations contribute to the relaxed feel.
I suggest going for breakfast. It's definitely a step up from IHop, but not fancy enough to have to put on your Sunday suit. The prices range from 5-7 dollars for a full breakfast including coffee and orange juice.
